Enjoying a cold but beautiful early morning in March

Forecasters tell us the we are going to be stuck with the chilly winter weather until at least the last week of March. Not a very nice prospect.

But, of course, an early winter morning can be quite beautiful to watch, particularly from the warm comfort of one's living room ...

PS
The birds seem to be quite happy that I restarted feeding them. It cannot be easy for them to find something to eat in this cold March weather.

Winter is back!

Officially, we have had spring now for almost two weeks, but it certainly does not seem so. Winter is back, also here in southern Sweden.

Last night, when I looked out my living room window, this was the scenery:

Early this morning, it was like this:

Gabrielle Réjane - a late 19th century theater "mega star"

Gabrielle Réjane

French actress Gabrielle Réjane (1856 - 1920) was - together with her great rival Sarah Bernhardt - an international "mega star" of the late 19th and early 20th century theater world:

In 1894 she appeared in London. The following year, she performed in her most famous role as Catherine in Sardou's Madame Sans-Gêne, in New York City. Her performances in Madame Sans-Gêne (1893) made her as well known in England and the United States as in Paris, and in later years she appeared in characteristic parts in both countries, being particularly successful in Zaza and La Passerelle. She opened the Théâtre Réjane in Paris in 1906.
Along with her great rival, Sarah Bernhardt, she served as the model for the character of the actress Berma in Marcel Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time (A la Recherche du Temps Perdu). The essence of French vivacity and animated expression appeared to be concentrated in Madame Réjane's acting, and made her unrivalled in the parts which she had made her own.

Madame Réjane as Nora.

In 1897 madame Réjane gave four performances in Copenhagen to an enthralled audience, although the reviewer in the Swedish journal Ord och Bild thought she appeared somewhat tired in her famous role as Catherine. But Réjane's Nora in Ibsen's "A Doll's House" seems to have convinced the critic:
"A Parisian Nora, graceful and piquant, but by no means the Norwegian author's warbling skylark and jumping squirrel".

Measuring air pollution in Berlin (in 1905)

Dust measuring in Berlin in 1905

Berlin was a "progressive" city already in the early 20th century. Devices like the one above were used to measure the dust level in the center of the city.

A chilly March sunset in Øresund

March has been colder than average so far here in the Øresund region.
Tonight when I went for a walk on the Hittarp reef, the temperature was about -3° C (27 F). The light was very nice just before sunset.

Heavy load carrier Meri in Øresund

The picture shows heavy load carrier Meri (105,4 x 18,8 m) approaching Helsingborg at about 1.30 P.M. today on its way to Nyköping. The load looks interesting, but I have no idea what these big "tanks" are used for.

Meri joined the fleet of Finnish Gaiamare Ltd last year.

This is how the builder, STX Turku shipyard, describes the vessel:

The multifunctional vessel is an ice classed open deck carrier intended for transporting in the Baltic Sea region demanding project cargo, such as offshore wind farm structures as well as containers and bulk cargo such as energy wood. The Aker Arctic DAS TM vessel is able to operate bow and stern ahead in ice conditions that reflect to Finnish-Swedish Ice Class 1 A notation.

Two cargo ships in the Sound

Just after 5 P.M. today, the container ship Anne Sibum (151 x 22 m) and the roro cargo ship Mistral (153 x 22 m) met in Øresund.

Anne Sibum and Mistral meet close to Hittarp in Øresund.

The Anne Sibum was on its way to UST'-LUGA.

The destination for Mistral was Santander.
