The winter of 1871 was cold in Denmark. These seven Danish schooners and galeases were stuck in the ice off Aarhus in January that winter. My colorization of an image in the M/S Maritime Museum of Denmark archive. The museum gives the names of four of the ships: The galeas Sophie, the 2-masted schooner Thales, the galeas Elisabeth and the 2-masted schooner Kirstine, all from Aarhus.
Catastrophes, wars, terrorism, ecological disasters, deadly diseases, poverty .... The list of tragedies - both personal and public - is endless. Every day and hour media, politicians, experts - and charlatans - bring us a never ending barrage of bad things. No wonder that many people feel depressed and weary. This blog tries - in a modest and personal way - to contribute to a more balanced view. After all, there is so much to appreciate and enjoy in life ...

King Christian X of Denmark on one of his morning rides (c. 1940-1941)
King Christian X of Denmark on one of his morning rides through Copenhagen during the German occupation. The photo - here shown with my editing and colorization - is in the National Museum of Denmark archive.
"During the first two years of the German occupation, in spite of his age and the precarious situation, he nonetheless took a daily ride on his horse, Jubilee, through Copenhagen, unaccompanied by a groom, let alone by a guard. A popular way for Danes to display patriotism and silent resistance to the German occupation was wearing a small square button with the Danish flag and the crowned insignia of the king." (Wikipedia)
