Catastrophes, wars, terrorism, ecological disasters, deadly diseases, poverty .... The list of tragedies - both personal and public - is endless. Every day and hour media, politicians, experts - and charlatans - bring us a never ending barrage of bad things. No wonder that many people feel depressed and weary. This blog tries - in a modest and personal way - to contribute to a more balanced view. After all, there is so much to appreciate and enjoy in life ...

Peter Schreier sings "Im wunderschönen Monat Mai"
Cherry blossom time in Washington D.C. - also unforgettable
Thirty years ago I heard the great German tenor Peter Schreier perform Schumann´s song cycle Dichterliebe in the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. For me it was an unforgettable, enchanted evening. And after all these years, I am still convinced that nobody interprets these marvellous songs better than maestro Schreier.
As we now have entered the wonderful month of May, why not listen to Schreier and the first song of the cycle:
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Knospen sprangen,
Da ist in meinem Herzen
Die Liebe aufgegangen.
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai,
Als alle Vögel sangen,
Da hab' ich ihr gestanden
Mein Sehnen und Verlangen.
(Heinrich Heine)
In the wonderful month of May,
When all the buds were bursting open,
My love burst forth from my heart.
In the wonderful month of May,
When all the birds were singing,
I confessed to her my yearning and my longing.
